Why The Committee To Fix Washoe Schools?

When a meeting to raise taxes was held at Galena High School in 2007 to build public support, 3 people attended, which was not a complete surprise. There had just been an election, and the sitting Governor has promised “no new taxes”, yet, here was Washoe County School District proposing just that.

Ironically, on of the three points they were relying on for public support was doorknobs on classroom doors. At the time, in an emergency, a teacher would need to open the door and lock it from outside, closing the door once back inside the classroom. The question the district refused to answer was, if they were spending $20 million a year in maintenance (much higher $ in 2024), then why now prioritize door knobs. The repeated answer for 2 years was silence on this question, ending with the defeat of AB46. Later, it was discovered that employees at the district had been involved in a scandal uncovered by the Washoe County School District Auditor that was a combination of fraud and nepotism, both a violation of district policy. Those employees involved are no longer with the district since that discovery. It was never a question of replacing the doorknobs, that should have been a priority, without using it as a safety threat to gain leverage in a discussion about increasing taxes. Without priorities, it becomes endless tax increases without accountability.

After this, and many other meetings and revelations, The Committee To Fix Washoe Schools was created. The committee narrowly keeps the focus on the Washoe County School Board of Trustees and the Superintendent they are responsible for hiring and holding accountable. All of them must be dedicated to Transparency and Accountability to have a school district that truly represents the people of Washoe County.

That is why nothing is more important than electing the right people to be Washoe County School Board Trustees. In 2024, that is the election of Diane Nicolet.
