Inequality On The Washoe County School Board

It's Time To Elect A Man President Of The School Board

It’s Time Elect A Man President Of The Washoe County School Board

The Washoe County School Board is guilty of discrimination over the last 15 years, and was made aware of these facts on December 7, 2024. During those 15 years, a man has only served as President twice, 2012 and 2015. You are reading that correctly, a man has not been President of the Washoe County School Board in 10 years.

According to the school districts website and approved minutes from official meetings, here are the board members who have been elected president of the school board since 2009:

2009 - Barbara Clark

2010 - Estela Gutierrez

2011 - Barbara McLaury

2012 - Ken Grein

2013 - Barbara Clark

2014 - Barbara Clark

2015 - John Mayer

2016 - Angie Taylor

2017 - Angie Taylor

2018 - Katie Simon Holland

2019 - Katie Simon Holland

2020 - Malena Raymond

2021 - Angie Taylor

2022 - Angie Taylor

2023 - Elizabeth Smith

2024 - Elizabeth Smith

Think about what has happened at the Washoe County School Board over the last 10 years, the failed Superintendents, the policies that have been approved, the appointments that have been made, the way parents and the public have been treated.

During the last 10 years, 3 individuals have had an over-sized influence on the agenda at school board meetings in Washoe County. Katie Simon Holland served back to back terms during the termination of Superintendent Traci Davis. State Senator Angie Taylor was president of the school board 4 out of the last 10 years, in two back to back terms, and was instrumental in the establishment of Elizabeth Smith as President for the last two years. In assessing the current state of the Washoe County School District, State Senator Angie Taylor's responsibility is near 60%.

It is time to elect a man as President of the Washoe County School Board. On Tuesday, January 14th, the school board will get that chance. Inequality, with regard to who controls the agenda at school board meetings in Washoe County, has to stop and it will.

The Committee To Fix Washoe Schools is taking this issue to the Nevada Legislature. Funding for Nevada schools in the 2025 Legislature should be contingent on a change in Nevada law the prohibits board members from serving as President two years in a row. In fact, what has happened at the Washoe County School Board in the last 12 months has created a movement to completely restructure school boards across the State of Nevada, including the election of Superintendents and protections for citizens attempting to give public comment under NRS241.
